This page is about the Limits view in your application’s settings. It is not about reducing your billable request count. For that, see Limiting requests.
The Limits page shows the top-10 custom metrics in your app by unique key count from the last recorded minute. Above the table, it also shows your app’s total unique keys and the recorded time for that minute. Open the Limits page in your app. A unique key is one custom metric name plus one combination of tag values. Two limits apply to unique keys:
  • Storage: AppSignal stores up to 10,000 unique keys per minute for each app and drops the rest. The total on this page never goes above 10,000. Reaching it means your app hit the limit in that minute. See why custom metrics get dropped.
  • Queries: the Public API (V2) processes up to 100 series per timeseries query and 1,000 per list query. Dashboard charts use the same API. Each field counts as a separate series.
A custom metric has high cardinality when a query on it matches more series than the query limits allow.

What the page shows

For each of the top 10 custom metrics, the page lists:
  • Metric name: the name of the custom metric.
  • Unique keys: how many distinct tag combinations were seen in the last recorded minute, and the share of your app’s total.
  • Tag examples: up to 10 tag combinations the metric reported in the last hour. The page shows five; select + N more to show the rest. Use this column to spot tags with many different values.

When to use this page

If you’re seeing gaps in your custom dashboards, use this page to find custom metrics with many unique keys. The counts on this page cover one minute. A query through the Public API (V2) matches every series active in its time range. When tag values change over time, a metric can match more series in a day than this page shows. To reduce the number of unique keys, review the tags on that metric and use a limited range of tag values when possible.
